My Catholic faith informs my conscience on the place of war in the world. There is such a thing as a “just war” and within a perfect context, war is an acceptable option. However, with the state of the world now and in the foreseeable future, a just war is not possible within the modern military complex. The just war is one of absolute self-defense; something that I have not seen within my life time, nor within any recent historical time. I cannot, in good conscience, participate in or support an armed conflict. The death of another human being cannot be justified in today’s technological context; I could not kill within the context of war and I refuse to be trained or to be deployed into a situation in which I would be expected and/or required to attempt to kill or injure another human person.
